A little background on Tonbridge:
Tonbridge used to be called Tunbridge, but the spelling was changed in 1870 to prevent confusion with nearby Tunbridge Wells. In the 11th Century, Tonbridge Castle was erected by Richard Fitz Gilbert who was a half-brother of Willliam the Conqueror, and who governed England while William was abroad. The centre of Tonbridge still contains a large number of 15th century working buildings - the oldest being Portreeves on East Street.
